Getting here, what to bring, and what people ask before they book.

Getting here

Fly into Los Cabos International (SJD), about 140 km and 2 hours south of the house. It connects to over 50 destinations across the Americas and Europe, and it’s the main gateway for most US and Canadian airlines. Condor runs a seasonal nonstop from Frankfurt if you’re coming from Europe.

The drive north takes you through Los Barriles and San Antonio, then down into La Ventana bay. It’s a good road and a good drive.

La Paz

The nearest real city, 40 minutes away.

It’s the state capital, with a long waterfront malecón, proper restaurants, hospitals and full-size supermarkets. It’s also where the boats leave for Espíritu Santo, which is worth a day on its own.

La Paz has its own airport if the connections work better for you.

Renting a car

You’ll want 4WD. There are plenty of rental options at SJD, and I’ve used BBB RentaCar for over 10 years.

Their cars have more miles on them than what you’ll get from the big agencies. They’re modern, they’re in good condition, they’re cheaper, and you don’t roll up looking like a tourist. I’ve never broken down in one.

The last stretch

Pavement runs out about 1.5 km from the house.

From there it’s dirt, then a turn into an arroyo that takes you down to the beach. Drive about 200 meters along the sand, then up the driveway to the house.

That drive is why this stretch of beach stays quiet.

What's nearby

Town’s about 1 mi. The supermarket’s 0.5 mi.

Kite Surfing Planet is next door, with a full restaurant and bar.

Hot Springs Beach

0.25 mi north there’s an undeveloped bay with hot springs running up through the sand.

People walk to the north end, pile up the pebbles into a tub the size they want, and sit in it while the water comes up warm underneath. Late afternoon on the right tide is when it happens.

Bring a beer. It’s one of those things people do here every trip.

Questions people ask

Do I really need 4WD?

It’s highly recommended. The last 1.5 km is dirt, and the final stretch crosses an arroyo and 200 meters of beach. A regular car can make it, but 4WD makes the drive easy.

How many people does the house sleep?

8 comfortably, 10 at maximum. A king in the master, and teak built-in bunks in the second bedroom with 2 queens below and 2 twins above.

Can we bring the dog?

Yes. Pets are welcome. There’s a security deposit on the house.

Is there wifi that actually works?

Starlink throughout, with amplifiers around the house so the connection holds up in every room. Fast enough to work from here.

Do we need a car once we’re there?

Yes. Town’s 1 mi, the supermarket’s 0.5 mi, and everything else is a drive. You’ll want the car anyway for getting to trailheads, La Paz, and dinner.

When’s the windy season?

November through April. It fills in around 11:00 AM most days and holds until 5:00 or so.

Mornings are usually glassy and flat. That’s the window for stand-up paddling, kayaking, and open water swimming, which is some of the best I’ve found anywhere.

Summer is when the fishing and the ocean safaris take over.

Will we see orcas?

Maybe. They move through this bay, and it’s one of very few places in the world where getting in the water with them is legal, through licensed operators. Nobody can promise a sighting.

Can we launch from the beach out front?

Yes. Rasta Beach is right there, within 30 meters, and it’s one of the best launches in the bay.

Where do we store gear?

Lockable storage below the bedrooms, with board racks, hooks and a pump area. Outdoor shower right in front for the rinse-off.

Can we have a party?

Small gatherings are fine. Large parties aren’t. There’s a security deposit on the house.

Is cleaning extra?

No, standard cleaning is in the rate. An extra charge only applies if the house comes back excessively soiled, whether that’s from pets, a gathering or anything else.
