Wind season

November to April. The launch is within 30 meters of the house.

Rasta Beach

One of the best launches in the bay, and it’s within 30 meters of the house.

Wide sand, clean side-shore wind, room to lay out lines, and it doesn’t get crowded the way the beaches south of here do.

Why the wind works here

The bay narrows between the mainland and Isla Cerralvo, and the wind accelerates as it squeezes through. That funneling is what makes La Ventana stronger and cleaner than the water around it, and it’s why the bay routinely beats its own forecast.

Through the peak months the wind runs 15 to 25 knots, with days that touch 30. Most people are on a 9m most of the time, with a 7m and a 12m in the bag for the rest of the season.

The daily rhythm

Wind fills in around 11:00 AM most days and holds until 5:00 or so.

Mornings are usually flat and glassy. That’s when people paddle, swim, or take a kayak out before the first session.

Afternoons you’re on the water. Evenings, watch the sun set or hang out around the fire pit.

The water

This is the Sea of Cortez, so there’s no big open ocean swell to deal with.

When it blows hard it does get wavy, and waves run 3 to 5 ft. Plenty to play with, without the consequences of a real swell.

Learning here

La Ventana bay is one of the best places anywhere to pick up a wind sport.

Kiting, winging or foiling, all of it is learnable here. Winging and foiling have taken off in the last few years and the bay suits both.

The bay doesn’t get boring once you know what you’re doing. When the wind’s up and the chop builds, there’s plenty here for advanced riders working on big air and tricks.

Kite Surfing Planet is next door for lessons.

The downwinder

This is the run people come up to Rasta for.

Launch here and ride about 7 km down the bay to South Beach. Most people sort their own ride back.

Gear

Lockable storage below the bedrooms, with board racks, hooks and a pump area.

There’s an outdoor shower right in front of it, so you and your gear get rinsed before anything comes inside.

Between sessions, the plunge pool is right there.

Next door

Kite Surfing Planet is on the other side of the property line. Lessons, plus a full restaurant and bar.

Water temperature

Summer runs high 80s. As the year turns toward December the water gradually cools into the low 70s.
